“There’s a good chance they’ll cry when they hear my name.
And they’ll say, ‘I’m sorry, Dad, I’m so sorry.'”
That’s the line from a new video that has been making the rounds on social media and being shared across Facebook.
The video, titled “What I’ve Learned From my Dad,” was posted to YouTube in March by a YouTube user called Rufus and was recently shared more than 5 million times.
Rufuses mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous, says the video was an attempt to raise awareness about the suicide rates of Australian families.
“I thought I was doing good by my dad, I thought he had done good for us,” she says.
“But when I read about how much his death cost us, I was like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?'”
“What I wanted to do is raise awareness and get people to think about how it can happen to someone like my dad,” she adds.
The family had previously been on the receiving end of suicide attempts from their father.
“My dad was an alcoholic and he’d take his own life,” Rufs mother says.”[But] I was lucky to have had my dad there for me.”
“It was like a big step forward for my dad because when he took his own, I knew it was the right thing to do.”‘
There are a lot of good people out there’The family has not only lost a father but also a mother, a father figure, and two siblings, and it was a tragedy they were all killed in a matter of days.
“We had to learn that we can’t expect people to be perfect,” Ruffus says.
“You can’t just be happy and you can’t be happy all the time.
You need to be very conscious of how your family is living.””
I know there are a few good people [out there] out there that have a lot to offer,” Raffus adds.
‘You need to have a sense of humour’Ruffus is not the only family to experience such grief.
“A lot of people [live with] depression or anxiety, but there’s a lot [of] people that are living with depression and anxiety that aren’t thinking that way, or that have other mental health issues,” she explains.
“They just can’t cope with it.”
“There’s really no point crying for the pain, and so you need to take your time and just think of the good things.”
‘The biggest mistake’The video has received almost two million views since it was posted, with many people sharing their thoughts on the topic.
However, Rufu says she was not expecting such a positive response to the video.
“It’s been amazing, and I think that I have really had to look at the negative aspects of the whole situation,” she said.
“People have told me that the video has helped them.
They are talking about their sadness about the loss of their dad and they’re saying, ‘There are so many people out here who can help me.'””
I’ve been very grateful for people who have given me advice, who have offered to help me and their own support.”
She says she hopes that the footage will help raise awareness around the issue.
“The biggest thing I want people to understand is that people are not going to stop at one person’s death,” she concludes.
